Jamie Carragher has shared his concerns for Liverpool this season, saying the Reds have “a huge problem” in their midfield.Liverpool head into this campaign with new manager Andoni Iraola in charge after he took over from Arne Slot, who was sacked after the Reds finished fifth.The club has brought in several marquee signings, including Victor Munoz, Jeremy Jacquet and Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo. Carragher feels that Liverpool’s lack of business in the middle of the park could prove problematic this season.Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, he said: “The midfield for me is still a huge problem for Liverpool.”I haven’t watched all the pre-season games, but I watched the last two against decent opposition – it was Leeds and then Monaco.”And the problem Liverpool had last season was there was space everywhere in midfield. That has not gone away at all.”That’s only going to get bigger with the deployment of [Dominik] Szoboszlai in midfield.Jamie Carragher is concerned for Liverpool’s midfielder this season | GETTY”It looks like they’re going to play him, rather than as a No10, almost as a central midfield player alongside [Ryan] Gravenberch, and that is just pure box-to-box.”Carragher feels the Reds need to sign a deeper-lying midfielder, feeling the squad’s energy levels could be an issue.He continued: “You can’t say Gravenberch is not a really good player, or [Florian] Wirtz, or [Dominik] Szoboszlai.”But as a midfield three, I look at that and think, oh no, there’s almost too much quality, but they all want to go and play and run. And even in pre-season, the space is coming through the middle.”Carragher feels the Reds need to sign a deeper-lying midfielder | GETTYLiverpool had a major drop-off last season after winning the league the year before, and have lost key players Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate.The Reds conclude their preparations against Como on Sunday, after winning two and losing a couple so far this pre-season.Liverpool kick-off their Premier League campaign against Newcastle, before facing Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town.The Reds will be without Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni, who are all out with long-term injuries.Andoni Iraola took over from Arne Slot at Anfield after the Reds finished fifth in the league | REUTERSDefender Joe Gomez is facing a period on the sidelines after being forced off injured in Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly.Providing an update on Gomez’s condition just over a fortnight ago, Iraola said: “Joe has a muscle injury. I think it was quite clear since he complained straight away, so it will depend how he evolves, but he will be some weeks off.”It’s a muscle injury and [with] muscle injuries it is difficult to say one day, but normally I always put myself as one month.”If it goes very good the injury is a little bit less, if [not] it goes a little more. It’s not massive, it’s a normal muscle injury, [but] I think it’s going to be impossible to have him for the start of the season because we are not so far [away]. It shouldn’t be a lot more.”
