Best European destination for city break named — and a vibrant part of Spain is the place to go




Madrid has been named the best European destination for a city break, according to new research.The Spanish capital topped the list, which looked at 10 different factors, including food, culture, affordability, nightlife, accessibility and public transport.Each destination was scored by a team of travel experts across the 10 categories for Iglu Cruise’s Ultimate City Break Index, with cities receiving a final score out of 100. The index assessed each city using 10 individual metrics: culture, food, accessibility, safety, weather predictability, walkability, affordability, public transport, nightlife and aesthetics.Madrid has been named the best city break in Europe | GETTYMadrid came out on top with 77 points, boasting a fun late-night culture and food scene. It is also easy to get around. In fact, Madrid Metro is the second-longest in Europe and has more than 300 stations.Another Spanish favourite, Barcelona, was narrowly behind in second place with 76 points. The Catalan capital was praised for its food scene, accessibility and nightlife, with regular flights throughout the year and a large selection of venues for evening entertainment.Rome took third place with 74 points. Holidaymakers in search of culture, nightlife and aesthetics are sure to love this. The Hungarian capital was noted for its relatively low accommodation and living costs, while it has more than 100 museums and 40 theatres.Amsterdam and Berlin both scored 71. Amsterdam performed particularly well for safety, accessibility and nightlife, while Berlin’s strengths included its famous nightlife scene, public transport network and safety score.Dublin was further down the list, but a great option for those looking for something closer to home.
