US envoy on antisemitism to make ‘representations’ over Green anti-Zionist motion

The US is to make “representations” to Westminster over the Green Party’s controversial adoption of a policy branding Zionism as racism, Washington’s top adviser on antisemitism has said. Special envoy Ambassador Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun suggested Zack Polanski’s party was being hypocritical in adopting the policy. Mr Kaploun indicated this amounted to antisemitism under the definition of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), signed by the British Government in 2016, in applying double standards towards the Middle Eastern country. The key ally of President Donald Trump took aim at Zack Polanski’s party at a press conference in Washington after the motion passed.Mr Kaploun, whose full title is special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, said: “First of all, we will be making some representations on the issue.”He added: “I think a lot of countries are being hypocritical in the sense…they will only focus on Israel; they will not focus on other countries.”If you look at the definition of the IHRA accords, which Britain signed, that the same condemnation that you want to use about Israel has to be used across the board on every country, and I don’t think they’re living up to that standard of what they signed in their agreement.”The Green Party motion, backed by conference-goers on Sunday, has sparked a fierce backlash, with Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis condemning it as “poisonous antisemitism”.Rabbi Yehuda Kaploun is a long-time ally of President Trump | GETTYThe motion declared the Greens to be an “anti-Zionist party” and set as policy that Zionism, the movement to develop and protect a Jewish state in Israel, will be “treated as any other form of racism”.It also backed the establishment of a “single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital”.The vote in support came just days before the third anniversary of the deadly October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas that triggered the devastating war in Gaza, which has killed thousands and left much of the Palestinian enclave in ruins. Members in Brighton on Sunday backed the motion with 1,022 votes in favour and 813 against.Zack Polanski has been banned from Israel after the vote | REUTERSThe motion caused a split in the party, with former leader Caroline Lucas urging party members to reject it during the debate because it was “alienating” Jewish Greens.Green MPs Adrian Ramsay, Ellie Chowns, Siân Berry, and Carla Denyer all said they opposed the motion. Ms Chowns, Herefordshire North MP and the party’s foreign affairs spokeswoman, said in a social media post that she was concerned the motion “risks fuelling division and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.Afterwards, party leader Zack Polanski and the five MPs released a joint statement saying they would “always uphold universal human rights”, adding, “We will never tolerate any form of discrimination or harassment. “We will continue to stand in opposition to genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid and the illegal occupation. We will continue to call out the heinous crimes of the Netanyahu government.”Green Party leader in the Commons Ellie Chowns expressed concern over the vote | PASupporters chanted “say it loud, say it clear, Zionists are not welcome here” as the campaigners behind the motion, Greens for Palestine, gathered to speak to the media.Asked if the new stance meant Zionists would be kicked out of the party, former councillor Salma Yaqoob said: “Absolutely not”A party spokesman said: “The Green Party is an anti-racist party and has consistently opposed the illegal occupation of both Palestinian and Syrian land, called for an end to arms sales to the Israeli government and spoken out fearlessly about the devastating situation in Gaza and the West Bank.”Those positions remain central to our approach. So too does our deeply held commitment to equality, justice and human rights for all, and opposition to racism in all its forms.”There were minor clashes between pro-Israel and pro-Palestine supporters outside the conference | GETTYThe Board of Deputies of British Jews said the Greens have become “an extremist party”, adding, “The motion passed…is an attack on the Jewish community.”The position will become party policy, but under Green protocol, it does not require all party politicians to back it.Labour Party Chairwoman Bridget Phillipson described the decision as “fundamentally wrong”.The Conservatives said it showed the Green Party is “toxic to its core”.
