British holidaymakers flying home from Tenerife will soon be able to pick up a Greggs sausage roll before boarding after the bakery chain announced plans to open its first overseas shop in nearly 20 years.The popular high street baker is launching a new branch at Tenerife South airport later this month in what marks Greggs’ return to international expansion for the first time since its Belgian venture closed in 2008.Greggs described Tenerife as “the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting” as the company looks to build on strong sales growth.Tenerife South airport handles around 13 million passengers every year, with roughly half travelling to and from the UK. The new branch will become Greggs’ only outlet outside Britain.The shop will be located within the airport’s international departures area, allowing passengers to buy food before flying home or continuing onward journeys.Customers will be able to purchase Greggs staples including sausage rolls, bakes, sandwiches, sweet treats and breakfast items.The Tenerife branch will also feature several menu additions inspired by local tastes. A Spanish omelette roll is set to appear on the breakfast menu alongside freshly squeezed orange juice prepared and bottled in-store each day.Greggs said the additions would offer customers “a refreshing taste of island life”. The company operates more than 5,000 shops across airports, railway stations and travel hubs in more than 50 countries.Javier Cagigal, chief executive of Lagardere Travel Retail Spain and Portugal, said the partnership would provide passengers with “a familiar, comforting choice in departures”.The Tenerife announcement came as Greggs also reported another rise in sales during the opening months of 2026.The bakery chain told investors that like-for-like sales at company-managed shops increased by 2.5 per cent during the first 19 weeks of the year.Total sales climbed by 7.4 per cent year-on-year to £800million. Greggs said recent menu launches had contributed to the growth, including a chicken roll developed as an alternative to the chain’s traditional sausage roll.The company also highlighted growing demand for matcha drinks among younger customers.Greggs has opened 41 new shops since the start of the year while closing 21 sites as it works towards a target of 120 net openings during 2026.Despite the strong performance, the company warned that continued instability in the Middle East could increase costs in the months ahead.Greggs said a “prolonged” conflict in the region could contribute to higher inflation during late 2026 and into 2027.
