A Scottish Labour MP has warned Andy Burnham his bid to build new nuclear will leave UK communities exposed to attacks from Moscow.Brian Leishman said the current plan to create reactor sites around the country will cause pockets of Britain to become Vladimir Putin’s targets. The Scottish MP repeatedly pushed against Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership and called for the former Prime Minister to step down in the final months of his time in No10. And, when Parliament returns on Monday, Mr Leishman is due to tell MPs: “Politicians from nearly every party say that the UK will likely be at war with Russia by 2030.”If the war hawks are correct, then why would it make sense for various areas to become targets for Putin?”Nuclear power plants or the other policy pushed by the nuclear energy lobby – hundreds of small reactor sites in locations up and down the UK – would make communities a target.”Mr Leishman has also hit out at “mammoth construction costs” of developing the required infrastructure, The New Statesman revealed. The English power station, Hinkley Point C, was originally estimated to cost the taxpayer £18billion – but now the cost has risen to almost £32billion, EDF said.Mr Leishman is due to oppose the plans in the Commons next week | PARLIAMENTThe MP is due to warn the cost of Scottish sites could explode at a similar rate with Britons left to foot the bill for the project. He will say: “The Government is struggling to persuade sceptical pension funds and asset managers to back the project.”The bottom line is that the financial cost of nuclear is not value for money. So why would Scotland having nuclear sites be any different?”As it stands, the Government is planning to pinpoint Torness in East Lothian, Hunterston in Ayrshire, and Dounreay in Caithness as hosts for the nuclear reactors. The cost of Hinkley Point C has grown by £14billion since 2015 | PAThe SNP has attempted to scrap the plot to scatter nuclear sites across Scotland – while the Tories have planned to make Scotland home to a third large-scale reactor.Speaking to the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham last week, Andrew Bowie, the Shadow Energy Secretary, said: “We will build that reactor, and no part of Britain will be off limits, including Scotland.”We will legislate to get it done. No more Mr Nice Guy. No more devolve and forget.”Energy is a reserved power of the sovereign Parliament of our United Kingdom, and I am fed up with the SNP playing games with devolved planning policy to block our nuclear renewal.”If the Nationalists want to stop us from delivering thousands of jobs, economic growth, and energy security for Britain, I’ve one thing to say: bring it on.”The SNP in Holyrood has consistently fought against the creation of new nuclear power sites north of the border and has used devolved planning law to block any such projects.Holyrood’s Energy Minister Stephen Gethins was fuming at the Tories’ bid to bypass the devolved power, accusing the top Tory of “riipping up the powers of the Scottish Parliament”.He raged: “The Tory mask has slipped. Not only do they want to impose new nuclear power stations on communities in Scotland, they want to try and do it by ripping up the powers of the Scottish Parliament.”Scotland does not need new nuclear power stations which are expensive, take decades to become operational and have huge public and environmental safety concerns. “Our focus must be on developing Scotland’s remarkable renewable energy resources which is quicker, cheaper and safer than nuclear.”
