Two dead and at least 10 injured after shooting at popular British tourist hotspot in Greece




Two people have been killed and a number of others were injured in a shooting in a village at a popular tourist hotspot on the Greek island of Crete.A 39-year-old man and 56-year-old woman were killed during the ordeal.At least 10 people were injured.And, four people have been transported to hospital.Two individuals whose role in the shooting is being investigated are among those people, police have said.The suspected shooters were armed with AK-47 assault rifles and shotguns.They opened fire in the village of Vorizia shortly after 11am on Saturday.No arrests have been made so far.Police were patrolling the scene in the village | REUTERSIt is believed that people involved have fled to a nearby ravine.A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the incident came after an explosion on Friday night at a construction site nearby.The sound could be heard from miles away, however, no one was injured from the improvised explosive device.There was damage to the structure under construction.Police stand guard in Crete | REUTERSVendettas between rival families in Crete can often lead to violence.Illegal gun ownership is also a problem.Guns are sometimes fired to celebrate special occasions such as weddings and festivals.A 52-year-old man was shot dead in western Crete last week.A college professor was shot and killed while visiting his family in Greece in July.Greece’s top officials, including the head of the police force and the head of the unit fighting organised crime, were on their way to Crete on Saturday, the official said.A police squad was expected to arrive from Athens to patrol the village.
