As autumn settles in and temperatures drop, thousands of Britons are already dreaming of escaping to warmer climates. In fact, around 14,800 people search for winter sun holidays online every month.Now, experts have found where you can catch some rays without breaking the bank. Research looked at the real costs of holidaying abroad, including those hidden extras like tourist taxes, transport fees, restaurant bills and visa charges.Thailand dominated the rankings with five destinations making the cut. Chiang Rai in northern Thailand has claimed the top spot as the most affordable winter sun destination. Visitors won’t pay any tourist tax there, and a meal for two costs just £11.33, or £5.66 each. With temperatures hitting 31°C in the coming months, it’s perfect for anyone wanting to escape the British winter. The Thai city scored 68.9 out of 100 in an affordability ranking by Airalo. Thailand’s island paradise Koh Samui landed in sixth position, whilst popular Phuket rounded out the Thai contingent in 10th place.South Africa proved equally impressive, with five cities featuring in the top 15. Knysna secured fourth place, followed by Durban in fifth, Cape Town in seventh, Stellenbosch in eighth and Johannesburg in ninth.The country charges a modest one per cent tourist tax on accommodation costs. A meal for two people ranges from £20.90 in Durban to £33.44 in Cape Town and Johannesburg.With temperatures reaching 27°C, South Africa offers brilliant weather alongside budget-friendly costs. It’s clearly become a favourite for Britons after winter warmth without the hefty price tag that often comes with long-haul holidays.
