Staycation: Where to go for a cheap UK break with ‘incredible landscapes and dramatic mountains’

The days are getting colder and darker in the UK, but it doesn’t mean you need to leave the country for your next holiday. There are many breathtaking, cosy parts of the country for a getaway that won’t break the bank, according to a travel expert. European travel and tourism expert and marketing director at CityTrip Travel, Christian Petzold, shared his top picks if considering Wales or the northwest of England. He told GB News: “The first place that comes to mind [for a cheap break] is Wales, particularly areas like Snowdonia and Pembrokeshire. Pembrokeshire has some beautiful walks and stunning views | GETTY”These are perfect if you like the outdoors and hill walking, and the landscape is just incredible, varying from dramatic mountains to precipitous sea cliffs.”Wales has lots of gorgeous options, whether you want to explore roaring mountains or take a city break – “prices are also relatively modest”, Petzold added. He explained: “If you’re sleeping in guesthouses or hostels, the price tends to start at around £25 to £40 a night for a basic room. Even dinner can be cheap if you dine locally or at pubs, which typically provide good food at reasonable costs.”Outside of Wales, Britons should consider the northwest of England or the Lake District. Petzold said: “While the larger towns are pricey, there are several villages and self-catering holiday cottages where you can find bargain stays. “Walking and exploring the lakes costs nothing, and if you’re happy to self-cater, you can have a pleasant holiday without spending much money.”A vague figure for accommodation and food could easily be £50 to £70 per day, depending on how you play it.”There are bargains to be had across the UK, and those who would prefer to holiday in Scotland can also find themselves a great deal. There are some surprisingly affordable options near the Lake District, according to the travel expert | PA Petzold added: “Scotland has tremendous low-budget holiday opportunities, with the Highlands or areas around the west coast like Oban or Fort William.”You can stay at hostels or tiny B&Bs for only £20 to £35 per night, and there’s world-class natural scenery from lochs to mountains.”Public transport is adequate to travel on a shoestring, and all but the most ambitious of outdoor activities, such as hiking, visiting castles, or driving scenic routes, are free or dirt-cheap.”
