Green meltdown as activists label Reform UK ‘fascist’ and claim Britain faces ‘far-right autocracy’

Britain faces as much as a 35 per cent chance of a “far-right” party winning power at the next election, activists have claimed at a Green Party event. Campaign group Unlock Democracy has warned of a “significant risk” of a “far-right” party winning power when Britons next head to the polls.Speaking at a Green fringe event in Brighton, campaigners said the UK has a 35 per cent chance of producing an “autocratic” Government in 2029.In an Unlock Democracy report, that risk is raised to as much as 55 per cent. The warning comes after a report published by the group raised concerns that the Heritage Foundation’s “Project 2025” blueprint, something critics claim overextends Donald Trump’s overreach in the US, could be replicated in Britain if so-called “bad actors” come to power. The group claims that UK democracy is “going backwards”, citing “harsh” protest laws and the requirement for photo ID, which they claim “discriminates” against certain groups.Former Liberal Democrat MP and Unlock Democracy’s director Tom Brake, addressed crowds alongside Livvy Gibbs of Make Votes Matter – formerly of Hope Not Hate.Mr Brake said: “Electoral reform and proportional representation is one of the things that would help reduce the risk of an autocratic government, because as we saw at the last election, 34 per cent of the vote resulted in 64 per cent of the seats for Labour.”The next time round, it could be a Government of a different nature that gets the same sort of result, and proportional representation would make it impossible.”In the 2024 Reform UK Manifesto, there was a commitment to proportional representation which has now been jettisoned.Activists claim that if Nigel Farage comes to power, he would introduce extremist policies and tactics without the consent of the electorate | PA”They obviously think they’ll do better under first past the post.”The warning of a potential “far-right” government also prompted panic from those attending the event. One Green Party member asked: “What would the electorate do if they had a Reform Government, basically a fascist Government, passing laws that violated basic human rights?”What would we be able to do?”Casper Hughes, who founded the Media Sovereignty Act Campaign, blamed the media for the decline in democracy in the UK.

Fears of ‘far-right’ government also prompted panic from those at the Green event | PA”The billionaires have never relinquished ownership of the media, and until we get them to do that and take back that microphone, we are not going to have a democracy in this country,” Mr Hughes said. His group wants to “reclaim sovereignty over the ownership of Britain’s media from the international and national billionaire elite”.It claims that if Nigel Farage comes to power, he would introduce extremist policies and tactics without the consent of the electorate, such as weakening the right to peaceful protest, directly appointing judges, and implementing draconian policies towards migrants.GB News has approached Reform UK for comment.Nigel Farage has previously said has “done more to drive the far right out of British politics than anybody else alive”.
