Tenerife has been named the best island in Europe for a scenic road trip, beating other popular holiday destinations including Gran Canaria, Madeira and Mallorca.While Spanish destinations dominated the list, a beautiful British beach also secured a spot in the rankings. The island has more than 80 beaches and covers 1,560 square kilometres. Its contrasting landscapes have earned it the nickname “continent in miniature”, with volcanic peaks, desert dunes, deep ravines and Atlantic coastline all packed into one destination.A six-hour driving circuit can take in some of the island’s best-known sights, including Roque Nublo, the Maspalomas dunes and Bandama Caldera. The Portuguese island can be explored on a circuit taking around six hours, with highlights including Praia Formosa, Madeira’s largest public beach, the dramatic Cabo Girão Skywalk and the natural lava pools at Porto Moniz.The UK makes an appearance in seventh place, with the Isle of Skye scoring 63.7 out of 100. A 6.5-hour circuit takes in some of Scotland’s most dramatic scenery, including the Old Man of Storr, Quiraing, Dunvegan Castle, Fairy Pools and Neist Point Lighthouse.Visitors can also stop at Claigan Coral Beach, known for its pale crushed-coral sand and clear blue water.With a maximum elevation of 992 metres and a landscape of rugged mountains, waterfalls and coastal roads, Skye offers British travellers the chance to experience a spectacular road trip without leaving the UK.
