Donald Trump has called off massive strikes on Iran after an intervention from several Middle East countries.The President took to Truth Social to announce that the strikes would not go ahead as countries in the region urged him to hold off until the “perimeters” of a deal were agreed to.Mr Trump’s announcement follows a week of speculation the President was “considering a massive attack” against Iran – adding that it would be “bigger than ever before”.In a statement on Truth Social, the President said the US was “locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran”.”Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to,” the President said.”This would include the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.”Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL.”Israel has also agreed to the commitment, the President said, as he urged officials “get to work, everybody, and get it DONE”.On Saturday, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke to Mr Trump and expressed concerns over the plans to launch widespread attacks on Iran, according to Axios.MBS urged to Mr Trump rapidly de-escalate and refrain from launching strikes, a source with knowledge of the call told the outlet.Another source said the Saudis expressed their concern and had asked for “clarity” around the plan of action.Other regional powers, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Pakistan also pressed the US to de-escalate.Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke Pakistani army chief Asim Munir, who has served as a mediator between the two sides.Mr Araghchi also pressed his counterparts in Turkey and Saudi Arabia over the strikes.”Any hostile action by the U.S. or Israel — or participation or cooperation by regional countries in such actions — would be met with a decisive and proportionate response from Iran’s powerful armed forces,” he said in a statement.Separately, Qatari officials held talks with the Iranian Foreign Minister, White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Omani officials in an effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.The abandoned strike plans follow the White House urging Americans in the region to be ready to leave.In a statement, the US State Department said citizens in the region should “exercise caution and heightened vigilance” and be prepared for flight cancellations and travel disruptions.”Americans in the region should consider departing, or be prepared to depart should there be escalation. Americans outside the Middle East should seriously reconsider travel to and through the region,” it added.On Friday, the President openly discussed the strikes at a Cabinet meeting, first reported by CBS.”Well, we’ll be hitting them very hard and, you know, at some point they’re going to say, we just can’t take it anymore,” he said.Strikes between Iran and the US reignited and escalated in June after a ceasefire agreement, intended to open the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, dissolved.On Saturday, two vessels off the coast of Oman and near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz were struck by projectiles, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations.This is a breaking news story, more to follow….
