
British holidaymakers are swapping scorching overseas resorts for cooler destinations closer to home, according to new trends data, with one classic seaside town seeing interest more than double this summer.New research suggested Morecambe is the UK’s fastest-rising staycation destination, as extreme temperatures across Europe continue to reshape travel plans and fuel the growing ‘coolcation’ trend.The Lancashire coastal resort has seen searches jump by 106 per cent on last year, according to Booking.com, with other seaside and countryside destinations also seeing a surge in popularity.Morecambe’s revival comes as visitors rediscover its sweeping promenade, views across Morecambe Bay and easy access to the Lake District. This has experienced an 86 per cent increase in searches, and offers a quieter base for exploring Lancashire and Cumbria. The market town is well-known for its historic railway station, made famous by the film Brief Encounter. Its location also gives easy access to the Yorkshire Dales and Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape.Exmouth, in Devon, completes the top three after searches climbed by 76 per cent. The traditional seaside town boasts two miles of sandy beach and sits at the gateway to the Jurassic Coast. Active holidaymakers can enjoy coastal walks, watersports and boat trips along one of England’s most spectacular stretches of coastline.Further down the list, Penzance continues to attract visitors with its mild climate, picturesque harbour and easy access to Cornwall’s dramatic coastline. Finally, Stratford-upon-Avon remains a favourite for culture lovers thanks to its Shakespeare heritage, Tudor architecture, and riverside setting.Further down the list was Exmouth, Devon | GETTYThe research suggested Britons are happy to look closer to home for coastal escapes, countryside breaks, and destinations that offer a welcome break from the soaring temperatures affecting many traditional European holiday hotspots.And it is more than just beach holidays. Booking.com found that hiking breaks are becoming increasingly popular, with searches among solo travellers soaring by 661 per cent for the Seven Sisters Cliffs in East Sussex and by 164 per cent for the Lake District.Regional manager for UK & Ireland at Booking.com, Ryan Pearson, said: “This summer, we’re seeing holidays redefined.
